STRATA: Science To Raise And Track Achievement

Science and Special Needs

The Cambridgeshire SEN Science Project, comprising a group of special schools (PMLD, SLD, MLD, and EBD), has developed a scheme of work and an assessment and recording framework for science that addresses the particular issues faced by the teachers of children with special needs.

The Cambridgeshire Special Needs scheme of work provides a comprehensive range of activities that are both age appropriate and sufficient to meet the needs of the whole ability range. To find out how the scheme is designed to work, scroll down to Finding out more.

Assessment and Recording

One of the issues we wanted to address regarding the assessment was to help teachers to know what outcomes to look for in the classroom, especially with pupils where progress may be very limited. The other concern was to devise a method of recording that was both manageable and meaningful.

Scheme of Work for pupils working up to Level 1

These are the units corresponding to the 8 P levels and Level 1 of the National Curriculum that would be appropriate for PMLD and SLD pupils.

Scheme of Work for pupils working between Levels 1 and 4

These are the units that address the SLD, MLD and EBD range where pupils are working between levels 1 and 4 across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

STRATA: The Cambridge project

The STRATA project aims to design a scheme of work that:

Enhances children's scientific experiences. Contains differentiated activities and resources that relate to the P levels. Identifies learning outcomes that form the basis for the assessment and recording of P levels. Has small steps to ensure age-appropriate progression for those pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties.
