Salford - Science Through Telematics (Innovative Project)

Manchester University and The Order of Things Ltd.

This innovative project builds upon the Exeter University project. It will investigate the feasibility of the delivery of CPD via the Internet, and how forums can be used to share good practice between teachers and schools. The project will work closely with six ‘core' primary schools in Salford LEA, however all schools in Salford LEA will participate and will be given full access to www.primaryschoolscience.com.

Aims

The project aims to:

  • Develop a working model of how forums can be used to share good practice and to build ‘networks' of schools working together. Initially, this will involve only the schools in one LEA – but the outcomes will be equally applicable across all LEAs.
  • Demonstrate that the concept of ‘Internet Forums' can be extended – from a ‘place' in which to discuss ideas – to a ‘place' where teachers are also able to exchange resources and ‘post' reviews, comments and appraisals of their own work and others.
  • Develop models for delivering innovative and practicable CPD via the Internet that will provide teachers/subject leaders with, not only knowledge and know-how, but also, the resources they might need to effect development.

This will be achieved through working with teachers on a number of areas of the science curriculum. This work will provide a basis from which to introduce the use of the forums. The areas worked on will be Literacy and Science Education, and the Literacy Hour.

The Literacy and Science Education and the Literacy Hour aims to:

  • Produce CPD materials and supporting resources to enable subject leaders and classroom teachers to effectively integrate strategies to improve student's literacy through the teaching of science. To facilitate teachers' use of these strategies by providing access to www.primaryschoolscience.com.
  • Facilitate the sharing of the work that might be done by all teachers in Salford LEA on literacy and science via the use of the Internet forum.
  • Produce CPD materials and resources to enable aspects of the Literacy Hour to be taught through science. To facilitate teachers' use of these strategies by providing access to www.primaryschoolscience.com.
  • Facilitate the sharing of the work that might be done by all teachers in Salford LEA on the literacy hour and science via the use of the Internet forum

It is envisaged that the forums will form a lasting resource for primary school science teachers and that the sharing of good practice will most likely lead to their usage being transferred into other areas of teaching and learning.
